Here are JOCO’s answers to those burning questions. The frequently asked ones.

  • How did JOCO evolve?
The JOCO brand was conceived in early 2009 out of personal protest to the ever growing impact that both Plastic and single use waste was having on Health and the Environment.
Believing it possible to experience life’s luxuries without compromising health or the environment was the motive to Founder Matt Colegate developing the first JOCO cup.
Seeing the positive impact this small change in his personal day to day life provided. JOCO was born with the mission to empower individuals to Refuse plastic, stop singles use waste and enhance their daily ritual .
  • Are JOCO products ethically made?
Yes! The reusable, environmentally-friendly products designed, developed and offered by JOCO reflect a highly motivated aim to help reduce waste, human exposure to harmful chemicals in plastics, and harmful effects on the biosphere.  JOCO’s proactive environmental ethos extends to social issues that support fair and equitable interactions with staff, suppliers and customers.
  • Where is JOCO made?
JOCO products are derived from core brand values that have been unfaltering since day 1 . Designed , developed and produced in house by the JOCO team, JOCO products are Designed in Australia and artisan blown by JOCO artists in China. Made by artists NOT machines.
  • Are JOCO products toxic- free?
YES!  JOCO products are free of all harmful chemicals, ensuring the smartest choice for people and the planet.
All materials are tested and certified to pass the most stringent regulations.
Unlike plastics including so called ‘safe’ plastics, that require lengthy lists of unknown chemicals, the materials we use have no need for such elements allowing

    • For a material to be selected for a JOCO product it must pass various important criteria.
    • Non Toxic / and Fit for food and beverage
    • Fit for a lifetime of reuse , does not degrade into microparticles
    • Fit for the required performance
    • Responsibly sourced
    • Minimal footprint with maximum good return
    • Fit for repurposing or upcycling within the domestic market
  • Why choose a glass cup?
Why glass you ask? Because it’s not plastic. We care about the way your beverage tastes and the way the cup looks. After all, drinking coffee and tea is a part of everyday life.  Glass is in it for the long run, it’s hygienic, and doesn’t beat up your taste buds or Mother Nature.
  • What’s borosilicate glass?
Boro what? We could go into an elaborate scientific explanation, but all you need to know is it was founded by a German glass-making magician named Otto Schott in the late 19th century. It is well known for its resistance to thermal shock and acids,  heat retention, is light weight, shock resistant, non-porous and has great optical clarity. Borosilicate glass is free of harmful chemicals including all types of Lead, Bisphenols, phthalates and Cadmium. It’s durability also makes it microwave and dishwasher safe. Yep, borosilicate glass is high grade and the logical choice for your new best friend.
  • WHY Not plastic?
All plastics including BPA free plastic contain harmful chemicals. Some of which are classed as endocrine disruptors. Mimicking hormones the potential effects that plastic has been having on our generations are still being uncovered.
Most plastic is not recycled, it is collected and dumped.
For the small amount of plastic that makes it to recycling, it can only go through the recycling process a few times before the molecular structure degrades to a point , rendering the plastic as non recyclable. Plastic is not an ingredient of a circular model.
Recycled plastic has limited applications, a plastic cup cannot be recycled into a plastic cup. The risk of contamination from bacteria and also other chemicals used in the recycling process, requires the plastic item to be downcycled.
Plastic degrades into microparticles through use, saturating our health and environment. It is not just the post use  mountains of waste we need to consider.
  • Is Silicone plastic?
Silicone is NOT a plastic it is an elastomer. Plastic and Silicone are both man made polymers but they vary substantially in their ingredients, manufacturing processes and final Suitability for reuse.
  • What is the difference between JOCO silicone and plastic ?
The Single commonality between plastic and JOCO silicone is that they are both man-made polymers. JOCO silicone is an elastomer and substantially different to plastic and cheap silicone in very important ways to counter the aspects of the plastic crisis.
(Cheap silicones are made cheap by adding plasticizers )
  • WHY is JOCO silicone better for people and the planet?
JOCO  silicone is truly non-toxic, does not degrade into microparticles, is fit for a lifetime of reuse and has great repurposing options. A minimized footprint with maximum good return.
  • What is the packaging made of  and why is it better for the environment?
Incorrect or miss labeled packaging is a big contributor to the single use and plastic waste issue. It plays an important role in the product life cycle, but it should be considered carefully to ensure a minimised  footprint that provides maximum value. Unfortunately over packaging and plastic packaging plagues our world. Just like the paper disposable coffee cups that can’t be recycled due to the plastic lining, a lot of packaging made from sustainably sourced materials is rendered non recyclable due to the application of a fine plastic film to enhance appearance.  JOCO packaging is made from recycled materials, sustainably sourced materials and is also 100% plastic-free. Truly suited to an ongoing circular model. We care for every component that we produce and are responsible for its low impact Journey.
  • Can Components be recycled?
Curbside recyclable cannot be listed as a benefit for any material due to the well known failings of most domestic recycling programs.
These programs are more accurately described as collection programs, that more times than not direct the collected material to landfill either domestically or overseas.
With the huge amounts of plastic clogging the recycling efforts and absorbing funds and time, other materials , more suited to recycling and repurposing have been neglected.
This is another facet to the plastic crises and continuing to promote plastic as a material suited to recycling fuels the use of this material delving us deeper into the vortex.
JOCO products are designed for a lifetime of reuse. Unless broken there is no reason to discard the product. Unlike plastic JOCO components won’t degrade and become a hygiene risk .
If you do need to retire a JOCO component early ,all JOCO components can be successfully repurposed or recycled via specialised organisations. We need governments to support the use and reuse of the correct materials.
For select regions JOCO has a take back program for silicone. This has been underway for years and will soon be formalised. For further enquiries you can reach out to customer care.
  • How do I wash the JOCO product?
Good news: Every part of the JOCO product  is dishwasher safe except the Olive wood lid on the Flask. Be sure to place all parts of the cup / Flask  in the top rack of the dishwasher. Otherwise, play it safe and go with a classic hand wash.
Do be careful, sleeves may be slippery when wet or when heated to high temperatures. Ensure all components are dry before use.
Please do not use damaged product and handle broken glass with care.
  • Are your products microwave safe?
Most certainly. All of our parts are microwave safe. Be sure to remove the lid before reheating any liquids, and definitely check the temperature before drinking.
  • Will the silicone stain
JOCO silicone is a non porous material so unlike plastic it wont absorb stains , odours or bacteria. If you do find a mark or a smell, this will just be on the surface. If general washing does not remove this , you can use some bi carbonate soda in hot water to remove.
