The folk from REKINDLE rescue timber from waste within residential demolition in Christchurch and Auckland (NZ). They creatively turn it into furniture, interiors, sculpture, toy blocks and jewelery. Their mission is to support communities to utilise their waste fully while also maximizing the benefits of the purposeful work involved. Rekindle works to create employment and learning opportunities through community partnerships. They have expanded beyond timber into new materials once destined for land fill. Great amounts of material rescued from the residential demolition process is native timber logged in the early to mid 1900’s. Certainly a time before sustainable forestry methods were practiced and now very rare timber. Rekindle’s practises, craftmanship and clever people provoke problem solving and innovation around future uses for materials currently being treated as waste. We applaud their commitment to rethink, repurpose, reuse and recycle. Visit Rekindle here.
